Influencers

Thanks to social media and online resources, the vegan and plant-based whole foods communities all of the world have been able to get connected and share their information and experiences. Some of these actors have become strong influencers for the rest of us.

Here is a list of organisations and individuals who, in our opinion, make a difference. Feel free to suggest new names, so that we can add them to our list:

MEDICAL & NUTRITION EXPERTS

- Michael Greger, MD, at Nutritionfacts.org - Dr. Greger has a team of people who help him read through the scientific studies and articles, the most relevant of which are then summarized in short videos or articles on his web page. This is a primary source of information on PBWF.

- Garth Davis, MD - bariatric surgeon, plant-based advocate and the author of Proteinaholic, which we highly recommend.

- Caldwell Esselstyn, MD - 1956 Olympic gold medal winner, army surgeon and Bronze Star awardee; started working at the Cleveland Clinic in 1968; he directs the cardiovascular prevention and reversal program at The Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute, and has published over 150 scientific publications.

- Dean Ornish, MD - pioneer physician in nutritional research and reversing chronic diseases. In 2010, Medicare began to reimburse costs for Ornish's Program for Reversing Heart Disease.

- Ginny Kisch Messina, MPH, RD - dietition and nutrition consultant with many publications on healthy, plant-based living. Is involved in many prominent organisations, such as Vegan Health and The True Health Initiative.

- Neal Barnard, MD, FACC - psychiatrist and neurologist, fellow of the American College of Cardiology, founder of PCRM and the Barnard Medical Centre.

- Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine - a large group of health professionals whose aim it is to share information about healthy living through our food and other lifestyle choices.

Plant-Based Health Professionals UK - education and advocacy on whole food plant-based nutrition for prevention and treatment of chronic disease.

T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies - the author of The China Study offers valuable scientific information on the importance of a plant-based diet and the dangers of consuming large amounts of animal or highly-processed plant proteins.


SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCERS

- Mic The Vegan - vegan research Youtuber with a B.Sc. in Sustainability whose is currently doing nutrition studies in order for the haters to stop saying that he is not an expert. Well-made short but thorough videos about the issues involving plant-based and non-plant-based foods.

Rich Roll - very informative website and podcast by endurance athlete Rich Roll. Interviews with many famous athletes and experts in the field.

Live Kindly - news site focused on anything vegan, especially as it related to nutrition and health.

Plant Pure Communities - non-profit organisation that aims to build healthier, stronger and more sustainable communities through plant-based living.

Plant Strong - organisation that promotes healthy living through a plant-based diet. Founded by Rip Esselstyn.

Switch4Good - educational organisation set up by top athletes to promote the switch from dairy to healthier non-dairy alternatives. Inspired by Olympic athlete Dotsie Bausch.

- The Game Changers - from the makers of the documentary, their website provides lots of useful information on how to get started and move towards a healthier lifestyle.

- The True Health Initiative - non-profit organisation that promotes healthy living and lifestyle medicine. Brings together many medical and nutritional experts.

- VegNews - news site for anything related to veganism, including nutrition and health.

- Vegan Health - evidence-based nutrient recommendations; one of the most comprehensive sources of vegan information on the internet.
